Keep you, your family, and valuables safe. Rodel4U provides some tips for risk prevention in and around your home.
As revealed by a study by Professor Zinn, a senior lecturer in Forensic and Crime investigation at the University of South Africa, 75% of perpetrators said they targeted homes based on good information or at least the suspicion of a high-value steal, rather than targeting based on low security.
The study made for some interesting insights into the way South African criminals plan and execute domestic burglaries.
What motivates a house robber?
Locklatch Retail, who reported the findings, confirmed Prof. Zinn interviewed 30 convicted and incarcerated criminals. A series of 116 structured and open-ended questions were asked. He hoped that the information could be used by both the police and homeowners to prevent crime.
Through the survey, criminals were identified as,
- Experienced criminals who work their way up to house burglaries
- All are willing to use violence to get valuable items and money
- Victims are targeted because of their wealth and valuables
- Motivated by what they can steal and not getting caught
